Biography

Supervision

Dr. Alexander Coward completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Oxford in 2008 and is currently Founder and CEO of EDeeU Education, an education company working to enable people from outside academia to enjoy the full richness of academic and intellectual community one normally finds in a university.

Born in inner-city London, Dr. Coward grew up at the cross streets of three cultures. His maternal grandmother grew up in China, and the stories and philosophies she passed on to him he has carried with him to this day. He also inherited a German sensibility from his mother, spending considerable time with family and friends in visits to Austria and both West and East Germany during his formative years. His London upbringing was the final topping on this arrangement, crossing between the worlds of the inner-city estate of the family home and the splendor of museums, palaces and cathedrals inherited from Britain's imperial past.

From an early age, Dr. Coward showed a predilection for mathematics, finishing high school level maths at twelve years old. He completed most of his pre-college education by fifteen, and entered St Hugh's College, Oxford for his undergraduate training a year early at seventeen. There he organized lunchtime discussions with the college Chaplain Rev. Jerry Gilpin, learned the fine art of debate at the Oxford Union, and spent summers punting on the river Cherwell.

Dr. Coward stayed on at Oxford after receiving his undergraduate degree, first gaining his teaching credential at the Department of Education and then as a doctoral student in Mathematics. His one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education informed both his perspective of mathematics as a subject and his understanding of how to teach mathematics; especially influential was the guidance of the now Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Education, Anne Watson. For his doctoral studies he transferred to Brasenose College as Senior Scholar and worked with Prof. Marc Lackenby on problems in 3-dimensional topology and geometry, with a focus on algorithmic techniques.

Following the completion of his Ph.D., Dr. Coward spent several years living in different parts of the world teaching and researching mathematics, from America to Australia to Vietnam. He eventually joined the faculty at UC Berkeley, where he taught large mathematics classes to undergraduates. His experiences there led to the aspiration to create spaces where academics and students can come together to teach, research and learn free from the strictures of administrative bureaucracy. Since then, he has been working to turn that vision into reality at EDeeU.

In his spare time, Dr. Coward enjoys sailing, being a godfather, playing the piano, reading, and chess. As Senior Director of Studies with EDeeU Education, Dr. Coward supports students wishing to learn Mathematics as well as Education.
